The following are general guidelines for manuscript preparation. Please check with agent and publisher specifications for additional requirements before you upload your manuscript to them.

FICTION

Agents and publishers prefer to have completed manuscripts for fiction submissions.
Basic formatting:

  • Save your file as a .doc, .docx or .pdf format
  • The document should be double-spaced with paragraphs indented
  • Use Times Roman (or similar serif font) at 12 point
  • Put your title, word count and draft version on the title page
  • Number the pages (bottom-right)
  • Margins should be one inch on top and both sides; one and a half inches on the bottom

NON-FICTION

Agents and publishers accept book proposals for non-fiction projects. Manuscripts are not usually required. Basic elements in a proposal:

  • Cover page and the proposal’s table of contents
  • A two-page overview of the entire proposal
  • Target market that will buy this book and why
  • Competitive analysis of competing book titles and why yours is different or better
  • Author bio and platform explaining why you are the perfect choice to write this book
  • Marketing and promotion plan defining what you can do to market and promote the book
  • Chapter outline with a brief description of each one
  • One to three sample chapters formatted like the manuscript under fiction..
  • Save your file as a .doc, .docx or .pdf format
  • Use Times Roman (or similar serif font) at 12 point
